Philips Hue White A19 LED Smart Bulb

Review

These are my first foray into “smart” bulbs, and I’m very impressed. I bought two of the A19s to start, and after a bit of a rocky start (more on that in a second) they’ve been working flawlessly for almost a week now. They’re quite easy to set up and use–no need for a bridge/hub if you have a compatible Echo device–and they work with all the standard voice commands and apps. The light quality is very good, comparable to other high-quality LED bulbs I’ve used, and the colors are accurate. They’re not super bright (I have 60W-equivalent bulbs in some fixtures), but they’re plenty bright for most purposes. One thing to keep in mind is that the A19s are designed for indoor use only; if you want something for your porch light, you’ll need to get the BR30s instead.

Now, about that rocky start…I initially bought two of the A19s, but when I went to set them up, I discovered that one of them was DOA. No big deal, I thought, I’ll just return it to Amazon and get a replacement. But when I tried to remove the bulb from its packaging so I could pack it up and ship it back, I discovered that the packaging is not intended to be opened without destroying it. There’s a little perforated tab on the back that you’re supposed to tear off, but doing so completely destroys the packaging and makes it impossible to put the bulb back in. So now I have an unusable bulb and no way to return it. Not a great experience.

Fortunately, Philips customer service was very helpful. They sent me a return shipping label so I could send the DOA bulb back at no cost, and they also sent me a replacement bulb free of charge. So kudos to Philips for standing behind their product.

All in all, I’m very happy with these bulbs and would recommend them to anyone looking for a good LED bulb with smart features. Just be careful when you open the packaging!
