Samsung 860 EVO Internal Solid State Drive
The Samsung 860 EVO is Samsung’s newest line of consumer SATA III internal solid state drives. The 860 EVO successor to the 850 EVO line and offers several key improvements, most notably a significant increase in sequential read/write speeds as well as improved power efficiency thanks to Samsung’s new 64-layer V-NAND technology. The 860 EVO is available in capacities ranging from 250 GB to 4 TB.
The 860 EVO’s headline feature is its use of Samsung’s latest 64-layer V-NAND technology, which offers a significant performance boost over the previous generation’s 32-layer V-NAND. The 860 EVO is now able to achieve sequential read speeds of up to 550 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 520 MB/s, with random read/write IOPS of up to 98K/90K respectively. These represent significant increases over the 850 EVO’s respective max speeds of 540 MB/s reads and 520 MB/s writes.
In addition to the performance improvements offered by the new V-NAND, the 860 EVO also features an updated Controller and Firmware. The controller used is the same MJX controller found in the high-end 960 PRO/EVO M.2 NVMe SSDs, while the firmware has been optimized for use with the new V-NAND. Combined, these allow the 860 EVO to offer even better reliability and compatibility than its predecessor.
One of the other key selling points of the 860 EVO is its improved power efficiency. Thanks to the new V-NAND and controller, the 860 EVO is up to 30% more power efficient than the 850 EVO. This results in lower power consumption and extended battery life for laptops, as well as lower operating temperatures and quieter operation for desktop PCs.
The Samsung 860 EVO is an excellent SATA III SSD and an impressive upgrade over its predecessor, the 850 EVO. If you’re looking for a fast and reliable SATA SSD, the 860 EVO should be at the top of your list.

PNY CS900 Internal Solid State Drive
PNY’s CS900 is an excellent value for those looking for their first solid state drive (SSD), especially if your computer uses SATA III (6 Gb/s). Although it isn’t the fastest drive on the market, its price per gigabyte is hard to beat.
The drive comes in a standard 2.5″ form factor, making it easy to install in most laptops and desktop computers. The CS900 is available in capacities of 120 GB, 240 GB, 480 GB, and 960 GB. We tested the 240 GB model.
The drive uses a 3D TLC NAND flash memory chip from Micron, which is a reliable and well-respected manufacturer of SSD chips. The controller is a Silicon Motion SM2258.
Performance-wise, the CS900 isn’t the fastest SSD on the market, but it’s still plenty fast for most users. On our CrystalDiskMark benchmark tests, the drive scored 562 MB/s for sequential read speed and 523 MB/s for sequential write speed. That’s slightly slower than the Samsung 860 EVO (which uses the same type of NAND chip) but faster than the WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD.
On our real-world file transfer tests, the CS900 averaged 108 MB/s for large file reads and 107 MB/s for large file writes. That’s about average for a SATA III SSD.
The CS900 is also reasonably priced for an SSD, especially if you buy it at one of the online retailers that often has it on sale. At its current street price of $70 (USD), the 240 GB model we tested works out to just 29 cents per gigabyte. That’s a very good price for an SSD, especially one with decent performance.
Overall, the PNY CS900 is a great value for those looking for their first SSD. It’s fast enough for most users, and its price per gigabyte is hard to beat.
