The TP-Link Archer C5400 is an excellent tri-band router for gaming, streaming and other bandwidth-intensive tasks. It’s well-designed, easy to use and delivers fast speeds and solid range.

Design

The Archer C5400 has a sleek, black plastic design with three large, external antennas. The router measures 1.7 by 9.6 by 7.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 2.6 pounds. On the back of the router are four Gigabit Ethernet ports, a WAN port, two USB 3.0 ports, a power connector, and a reset button.

The front of the router has a row of LED lights that indicate power, Internet connection, 2.4GHz and 5GHz band activity, and LAN activity. There’s also a row of buttons for Wi-Fi on/off, WPS pairing, resetting the router, and enabling/disabling the LEDs.

The Archer C5400 comes with a desktop stand that props up the router at a slight angle. The stand can be removed if you want to wall-mount the router using the included screws and anchors.

Setup and Performance

Setting up the Archer C5400 is simple and straightforward using the TP-Link Tether app (for Android and iOS). After plugging in the router and connecting it to my modem, I opened the app and followed the instructions to create a new network. I named my network, created a password, and was online in less than five minutes.

Once it was up and running, I ran some speed tests to see how fast the Archer C5400 could go. I connected to the router using a Dell XPS 13 laptop equipped with a Qualcomm QCA9377 AC Wi-Fi adapter. When testing from close range (about 5 feet), I saw download speeds of 345Mbps and upload speeds of 342Mbps.

I then moved to a more challenging test location about 30 feet away from the router with several walls in between. Here, I saw download speeds of 153Mbps and upload speeds of 141Mbps. These results are very good, especially considering the obstacles between the router and my test device.

The Archer C5400 also did well on our 5GHz close-range throughput test, where we saw download speeds of 642Mbps and upload speeds of 648Mbps. At 30 feet away, our test laptop still managed to pull down 491Mbps for downloads and 485Mbps for uploads. That’s significantly faster than what we typically see from other 5GHz routers at this distance (around 400Mbps).

In terms of range, the Archer C5400 did an excellent job of covering my 2,000-square-foot home with Wi-Fi signal. I was able to get a strong signal in every room, including those that are farthest away from the router.
