The Aspire E 15 has a plastic chassis with a textured lid that feels sturdy. At 4.9 pounds and 15 x 10.2 x 1 inches, the E 15 is larger than the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (4.8 pounds, 15 x 10.2 x 0.9 inches) and the HP Pavilion 15 (4.3 pounds, 14.8 x 9.7 x 0.9 inches).
Ports
On the left side of the Aspire E 15 are an Ethernet jack, an HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port and a headphone jack. The right side houses a USB 2.0 port, a Kensington lock slot, an SD card reader and a DVD burner.
Display
The E 15’s 15.6-inch display features a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. That’s typical for a budget notebook, but this panel underperformed in our tests. When I watched the trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, Han Solo’s leather jacket looked more like brown cardboard, and fine details such as stubble on his face were invisible. In comparison, the Inspiron 15 5000’s 1080p panel produced brighter colors and sharper details; I could see every whisker on Han’s face.
The Aspire E 15 averaged 107 nits of brightness on our light meter, which is significantly dimmer than the average for budget notebooks (233 nits). It also fell short of the Inspiron 15 5000 (118 nits) and the Pavilion 15 (124 nits).
Keyboard and Touchpad
The chiclet-style keyboard on the Aspire E 15 offers 1.6 millimeters of key travel and requires 70 grams of actuation to press down, which is about average for laptops in this price range. However, I found typing to be comfortable thanks to the large keys that offer good feedback when pressed. On the 10fastfingers typing test, I reached my usual rate of 115 words per minute with a 2 percent error rate — slightly above my 115 wpm average — but I had to adjust to the slightly shallow key travel.
The 4 x 2.6-inch touchpad provided accurate navigation around the desktop as I scrolled through webpages and documents with ease. Multitouch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom and two-finger scroll were responsive as well; however, I noticed some cursor jitter when I tried to move it across the screen quickly or when I changed its tracking speed from fast to slow using Windows Precision Drivers settings.
Performance
With an Intel Core i5-8250U CPU clocked at 1.6 GHz (up to 3.4 GHz with Turbo Boost), 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, the Acer Aspire E 15 handled my everyday workflow without any hiccups as I jumped between more than a dozen tabs in Chrome while streaming an episode of Luke Cage on Netflix in another tab without any issues. The laptop scored a respectable 708 on Geekbench 4 — which measures overall performance — just below the mainstream average (719). It beat out both the Inspiron 15 5000 (Intel Core i5-7200U CPU) and Pavilion 15 (Intel Core i5-7300HQ CPU), which notched scores of 669 and 531 respectively..
